Temporary closure of Waipapa marae

from the Waipapa Marae Trust

Following the clean-up of the marae after the poukai, the Waipapa Mare Trust has passed a unanimous resolution this week to temporarily close the marae until Monday, 2 April 2023 to:

  1. Allow the Trust to remedy the issues in the new Taku Hiahia ablutions while the toilets are currently out of commission
  2. Enable the builders from the construction company ASAP to build the new enclosed walkway from Ngā Taiwhakarongorua directly into the adjoining ablution blocks.  The cut-through from the interior of Ngā Tai into the ablutions is at a critical stage underpinned by health & safety precautions which means the entire marae is entirely off-limits.

Covid-19 has delayed orders for equipment and building products offshore impacting the infrastructure rebuild at Waipapa.

The latest update on the building timeframe means the completion of Ngā Tai will be pushed out a couple of months because of the delay in getting the roof trusses delivered from the fabricator.  However, the roofing iron will be installed towards the end of March and the cladding will be undertaken in the following two to three weeks.

The Waipapa Marae Trust apologises in advance for any inconvenience this may cause beneficiaries.  However, health and safety are our primary concerns while construction is underway at the marae.

Cath Holland, Trust chair.

"On behalf of the trust, our gratitude goes out to everyone who made Poukai 2023 a memorable occasion for our King and his manuwhiri and we wish to thank you all for your contribution from the pae to the kāuta."
