Meenaa kaaore anoo koe kia werohia ki te rongoaa aaraimate, teenaa, kia kaha raa ki te whai i te werohanga. Maa te whai i te rongoaa aaraimate ka ora ai taatou katoa.
As our whaanau in Waikato and Taamaki brace themselves to spend more time at Alert Level 3, Kiingi Tuheitia reminds us all of our duty to stick to the rules and do what we can as individuals for the benefit of the collective. It is thanks to the incredible efforts of these communities that the rest of the country has remained safe from the Delta variant, and although we are still seeing community cases emerge we must acknowledge that the situation could be far worse.
Over the weekend we came together for Super Saturday, an epic nationwide event that highlighted our best qualities as a country: resourcefulness, energy, and community spirit. Here in the Waikato we were proud to see our whaanau getting behind the efforts and driving those numbers up. At the end of a mammoth day, just over 130,000 doses had been delivered. It was especially heartening to see Maaori record the highest ever number of vaccinations in a 24-hour period, with 21,815 doses delivered (10,825 first doses and 10,877 second doses). This contributed to Maaori vaccination levels increasing by 5.4 percent over the past week.
Overall, 63 percent of Maaori have received their first dose and 41 percent are now fully vaccinated. These numbers are moving in the right direction, but there is still a long way to go - especially when you consider that in general, 85 percent of New Zealanders have had their first dose and 65 percent are full vaccinated. Maaori are still considerably behind, meaning that we need to maintain the Super Saturday momentum and keep encouraging our whaanau to get vaccinated.
This is especially important as we consider the fact that Maaori continue to make up a disproportionate number of the emerging cases of COVID-19. Today, 31 out of 60 cases are Maaori, as well as 33 of the 92 cases over the weekend. The best way to stop this trend is to increase Maaori vaccination rates and protect our whaanau from becoming one of these numbers. |

Tangihanga
We know that tangihanga are particularly complicated during lockdown situations and we have put together this Tangihanga Process chart to provide information for whaanau on the appropriate guidelines to follow under Alert Level 4. For tangihanga at Alert Level 3, we encourage whaanau to act as though they are at Alert Level 4 and follow the above tangihanga process. We acknowledge that tangihanga under lockdown conditions is extremely hard on whaanau.
As part of this process, please also remember the following:
- If your loved one has died from COVID-19 then it will be critical for the Police and/or Health Provider to support you with information on what to do next.
- If your loved one has died from an unknown cause, a post-mortem will need to be undertaken. The Police will facilitate this process and will liaise directly with whaanau.
- A GP or Medical Practitioner will also need to complete the death certificate.
- Any whaanau wanting to make burial arrangements for Taupiri Maunga urupaa must contact Mr Tumate Mahuta on 0800 TAINUI (0800 824 684).
