As Delta begins to spread across the motu, we know that many whaanau are confused and concerned about the different alert levels and what it means for them. At this stage, we know that Waikato and Northland will remain at Alert Level 3 until at least Thursday, while Taamaki will remain at Alert Level 3 for at least one more week. Whaanau living in these areas can visit the official COVID-19 website for specific advice for each region and to check the boundary maps.
Kiingi Tuheitia is especially conscious that whaanau living in these regions are beginning to experience lockdown fatigue, particularly those who have been doing it tough in Taamaki since August. Our King stands with you, committed to his promise to abide by the same restrictions until the lockdown is lifted. He encourages all whaanau to do their part – if you’re living in an Alert Level 3 area, dig deep and stick to the rules. If you’re living elsewhere, check in on your whaanau, and take steps to make sure that you and those around you are fully vaccinated. As the vaccination rates increase, it will become safer to start lifting the border restrictions.
We know that some whaanau are still hesitant about the vaccine, for lots of reasons. However, the Kiingitanga and Waikato-Tainui know that it is the best way to protect our whaanau from the threat of COVID-19. With the Delta variant now very much in our communities, and with Maaori case numbers increasing every day, that threat is quickly becoming a reality. In the past 12 days, Maaori have accounted for 50% of new cases, and experience tells us that those Maaori cases will go on to be disproportionately represented in the hospitalisations and deaths. No one is denying the fact that Maaori have very real reasons to distrust the health system, but in this case, the mistake would be turning down a vaccine that has a very good chance of saving your life, or the life of someone you love. The image below shows just how effective the vaccination has been in protecting people during the Delta outbreak, with unvaccinated people making up 88.5% of cases and 92.5% of hospitalisations.
If you are uncertain about the vaccine, we encourage you to speak to someone you trust who has already had theirs – whether that’s your GP, a whaanau member or someone from your church. This Saturday there will be a nationwide campaign to support all whaanau to get vaccinated. Let's protect those that can't, those who are vulnerable and those we love by getting the jab. |

Tangihanga
We know that tangihanga are particularly complicated during lockdown situations and we have put together this Tangihanga Process chart to provide information for whaanau on the appropriate guidelines to follow under Alert Level 4. For tangihanga at Alert Level 3, we encourage whaanau to act as though they are at Alert Level 4 and follow the above tangihanga process. We acknowledge that tangihanga under lockdown conditions is extremely hard on whaanau.
As part of this process, please also remember the following:
- If your loved one has died from COVID-19 then it will be critical for the Police and/or Health Provider to support you with information on what to do next.
- If your loved one has died from an unknown cause, a post-mortem will need to be undertaken. The Police will facilitate this process and will liaise directly with whaanau.
- A GP or Medical Practitioner will also need to complete the death certificate.
- Any whaanau wanting to make burial arrangements for Taupiri Maunga urupaa must contact Mr Tumate Mahuta on 0800 TAINUI (0800 824 684).
